Mid-Prairie's Golden Hawk girls soccer team travels to Anamosa tonight for the first round of the Class 1A regional tournament. After Friday's 2-1 road loss to Bellevue, Mid-Prairie entered the game at 7-7 with Elise Gingerich scoring the lone goal, Avery Helmut having an assist and Niva Hellmuth making 11 saves. . This season, the Hawks won 31-27 with 191 shots, 107 shots on target, 49 corner kicks, nine assists, and 193 saves for a team save percentage of 87%. Individually, Elise Gingerich leads the way with 13 goals, while Zoe Curtis and Lydia Beachy each have four goals. Gingerich also leads with three assists, Curtis with two, Niva Helmut has the best saves on goal with 125, and Ruth Witthoft leads with a save percentage of 92%.
Anamosa is 9-3 on the season after losing 6-1 to Dyersville-Beckman on Friday. This year, the Blue Raiders have outscored their opponents 57-27 on 393 shots, 189 on goal, 43 corner kicks, 39 assists, 128 saves and a team save percentage of 83%. Individual leaders include Chloe Breitbach with 25 goals and 19 assists and Leah Whitson in goals allowed with 27 goals.
These teams met in Wellman on April 19th, with Anamosa winning 3-1, giving the Raiders their second straight victory in the series. The winner of tonight's contest will advance to Tuesday's second round of regional competition to face the winner of Hudson and Benton. The action begins tonight at 7 p.m. at Downing Field in Anamosa.
