Baton Rouge – The LSU football program has announced the addition of assistant coach Connor Cable, completing its staff for this fall season.
“We are thrilled to be adding a coach of Conor's caliber to our staff. His background in playing at the highest level in England sets him apart from many of our potential candidates.” said head coach Sian Hudson. “As both a goalkeeper and a coach, he takes pride in fine-tuning the technical details of the game and encouraging a fearless mentality in the goalkeepers he trains.”
Cable joined the Tigers from Lake Erie College and spent five years there, helping lead the Storm to new heights. Cable will primarily lead LSU's goalie unit and oversee LSU's soccer community service and outreach events.
“His understanding of the mental, technical and tactical aspects required for peak performance, and his dedication to promoting fun within the goalkeeper union, create an exceptional training environment for our keepers. “I guess so,” Hudson said.
The Spalding, England, native brings a wealth of experience to Baton Rouge, both from his previous work with Lake Erie's goalie unit and his own professional experience. Cable came through England's professional system, playing for various Premier League and Championship clubs including Norwich City and Cardiff City, and spent his youth academy years at Bristol City Football Club.
During the storm, Cable led his team to the GMAC finals and their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance last year. His coaching career at Lake Erie first began in August 2019 as a graduate assistant, helping the team to an 18-3 record, winning his first regular season title and making his first NCAA Tournament appearance.
Cable worked directly with goaltenders and saw starting goalie Tom John earn various awards including First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Region, and D2 Conference Commissioners Association Second Team All-American.
Due to the successful 2019 season, the Lake Erie coaching staff was named United Soccer Coaches Regional Staff of the Year.
Cable took on a new role during the Storm's historic season in 2021, as the team went 16-4-1 and won the GMAC regular season and conference tournament titles. The Storm won their first game at Nationals as the No. 2 seed in Super Region 3, defeating Lewis University 2-1.
In college, Cable was a three-time first-team all-conference selection at William Woods University in Missouri and was named National Defensive Player of the Week. For four years at the university, he was the starting goalie, and for three and a half years he was the team captain.
Cable still holds the school records for single-season shutouts (9) and shutouts (27).
Following his college career, Cable played for Cleveland SC in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) in the summer of 2021. While in the playing position for the team, his role also included liaising with the goalkeeper.
Under Cable's leadership, Cleveland won the Midwest Rust Belt Conference and reached the national semifinals. Additionally, Cable was named to this season's National Eleven and won the NPSL Golden Globe Award. During the 2022 season, Cable led the team to his second straight conference title. Cleveland SC advanced to the national quarterfinals and Cable earned All-Region honors.
Cable is ready for the next step in his career and the opportunity to help grow the LSU football program. “I am extremely honored and excited to be a part of LSU and the football coaching staff. My family and I understand the opportunities this position brings and the success both on and off the field, and we appreciate the environment here in Baton Rouge.” I can't wait to play an active role.”
Cable earned his MBA with an emphasis in Healthcare Management in 2021 and currently holds a U.S. Soccer D License and a United Soccer Coaches Goalkeeper License.
