IRON MOUNTAIN — Gray skies and rain clouds hung over Mountaineer Stadium long enough for the Iron Mountain girls varsity soccer team to play Tuesday against Three Lakes.
The Mountaineers struggled to advance in the game, and the Blue Jays won 3-1.
“I had zero energy.” IM co-coach Carly Lambert said. “Again, we're not chasing the ball. We need to be a little more aggressive. I think we played a really good game last Thursday… but they need to treat it like every team is the same. There is.”
During the 24 minutes of play, neither team scored a goal. That's when the Blue Jays took action. They quickly scored and took a 1-0 lead.
Three Lakes added another point three minutes later off a rebound and held a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Iron Mountain entered the second half with renewed energy. A foul by the Blue Jays resulted in a free kick, and the score was decided almost immediately.
Jadyn Simonetti took the kick and placed it past the Three Lakes goalie and into the right corner at 35:58.
At this point, the Mountaineers were leading 2-1.
The Blue Jays increased their lead to 3-1 with seven minutes remaining and would hold on for the win.
As the UP women's soccer finals approach, Lambert hopes to see an improvement in on-field communication and the overall energy of the players.
“We have two regular season games left before the UPS game, so we have a lot of work to do.” Lambert added.
Iron Mountain will complete the home portion of its 2024 schedule when it faces Houghton at Mountaineer Stadium on Monday at 5 p.m.
The Mountaineers conclude the regular season at Marquette on Wednesday.
