Dozens of high school hockey players recently received assistance in achieving their post-high school goals.
The Winnipeg High School Hockey League held its annual awards ceremony on April 25 at the Victoria Inn Hotel & Convention Center (1808 Wellington Ave.). Awards were given in three categories: on-ice, academics, and character. While all awards included bragging rights, academic awards included numerous $500 scholarships, as well as a $1,000 scholarship and his $3,500 scholarship, for a total of $36,000. exceeded the dollar amount.
Pinawa Panthers forward Jadis Dunsite has earned the Dave Hill Bursary. The prize money he received was $3,500, the highest prize at the time.
“That's pretty special. I didn't expect to win anything today,” Dunsite said. “I was pretty nervous going there. But it was very exciting.”
On the ice, the multi-sport athlete, who is described as an “excellent student” and “honest, dedicated, and hard-working,” maintained a 96 percent GPA in 11th and 12th grade while studying piano and working part-time. On the ice, Dunsite finished second on the team in scoring last season with 30 goals and 24 assists in 22 games. He plans to attend the University of Manitoba this fall.
“It's pretty expensive, so (the award) is pretty important,” added Dunsite, who also received this year's on-ice award for sportsmanship.
Chris Herman of the St. Paul's Crusaders has won the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League Scholarship, which is given annually in memory of Wayne DeSchwar. The $1,000 scholarship will help him reach his goal of studying dentistry at the University of Manitoba.
In addition to the two major scholarships, academic award recipients also include:
- Platinum Promotional Awards: $500 each. Ryan Crombie (Lord Selkirk Royals, forward) and Kyran Handsman (Miles McDonnell Buckeyes, goalkeeper).
- Canado Inn Scholarship: Presley Ostlund (Murdock McKay) $500. Don Barton Memorial Award: Jordan Ranger (Kildonan East Livers) $500.
Awards based on on-ice skills were awarded to players in each division (excluding top scorers), as voted on by the division's coaches.
- Sportsmanship Award: Brady Thorsteinson (Sturgeon Heights Huskies), Tyler Dalal (SJR Eagles), Jadis Dunsite (Pinawa Panthers).
- Defensiveman of the Year: Cody Allen (River East Kodiaks), Aaron Besik (West Kildonan Wolverines), Brady Heilman (CPET Canadiens).
- Rookie of the Year: Karsten Woloschen (JH Brands Broncos), Logan Barnabe (Gabriel Roy Cavaliers). Brody Crellin (Murdoch McKay).
- Goaltender of the Year: Keon Toltz (Vincent Massey Trojans), Cooper Jonnon (Kelvin Clippers), Sage Delaronde (Murdoch McKay).
- Most Valuable Player and Divisional Scorers: Gavin Holod (Stonewall Rams), Evan Christianson (West Kildonan Wolverines), Eston Kutcher (Kildonan East Reivers).
The Travis Price Hockey Spirit Award was presented to a player from each team. These awards, which include a $500 cash prize, were determined by votes from each team's players and coaches. A total of 40 players received the Travis Price Hockey Spirit Award, with four teams splitting the award between his two players.
Character and Most Valuable Player awards went to Evan Grenham (Loreto Scorpions), Adam Newcomb (Stonewall Rams), Nathan Gutknecht (College Jeanne Sauvé Olympians), and Logan Gilkes (CPET Canadiens). ), Asher Peeren (Glenlawn Lions), David Berube (Louis Riel Nautical College) Each of these awards included $250 to be used toward post-secondary education or athletic expenses.
Tim Juer of the Pinawa Panthers was named Coach of the Year.
The league is comprised of 36 boys high school hockey teams from all over Winnipeg as well as out-of-town communities such as Portage la Prairie, Sanford, Selkirk and Steinbach. The 2023-24 division champions were: St. Paul's Crusaders (Platinum Promotion Division), Gabriel Roy/Point des Chenes Cavaliers (Winnipeg Free Press Division), and Murdock McKay (Prices Division).
