The Orlando Magic and Klay Thompson have a “shared interest” in the Golden State Warriors star who will be an NBA free agent, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium. That's what it means.
Charania reported on FanDuel TV on Monday. run it back Thompson and other notable free agents view Orlando as an attractive opportunity:
Paul George, who can opt out of his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers, has also emerged as a new target for Orlando.
There's no guarantee that the Magic will actually land a marquee star, but it's a pretty safe bet to at least try.
According to Spotrac, they could create up to $58.2 million in salary cap space, which is more than enough to put a max contract on the table. The front office is also motivated by a fifth-place finish in the Eastern Conference as a means to accomplish something big, and believes its experienced veterans can help lift a young and promising team.
Thompson will undoubtedly help address one of the Magic's biggest challenges on offense. They averaged the fewest 3-pointers per game (11.0) and ranked 24th in 3-point percentage.
Although Thompson is no longer the dynamic two-way guard he was in his prime, he is still an elite sharpshooter. He made 38.7 percent of his long-range shots this year.
The 34-year-old will also bring the proverbial “championship DNA” after winning four titles with the Golden State Warriors.
Still, assuming Thompson signs at or near the max, it's worth asking if he's a good free agent to pursue. He hasn't been the same player since his anterior cruciate ligament and Achilles tendon injuries, and may not age gracefully as he gets deeper into his 30s.
A franchise in a small market like Orlando can't afford to have a gamble like this backfire. I can imagine a future where Thompson's contract becomes burdensome and limits what the Magic can do elsewhere on the roster.
Regardless of whether the five-time All-Star lands in Central Florida, he will have some rival suitors if he wants to capitalize on their interest and sign a better contract with Golden State. It seems like it will happen.
