Charles Oliveira served as a backup for Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler.
McGregor (22-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC) will return from a nearly three-year layoff and face Chandler (MMA 23) in the headliner of UFC 303 on June 29 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. (Pay-Per-View, ESPN, ESPN+).
Oliveira (34-10 MMA, 22-10 UFC) believes his reserve role is an advantageous situation for him, but if it's McGregor he has the opportunity to fight, his offer will be subject to conditions. is attached.
“Stop talking about 170 and Conor McGregor,” Oliveira said through an interpreter during the UFC 301 media scrum (h/t MMA Fighting). “I offered myself to be a substitute for that fight, and obviously, I don't want that. If I don't fight, I'll make some money, and if I fight, it'll be great.
“The only stipulation is that if I end up fighting McGregor, I have to renegotiate (the contract) before that. When I say that, everyone starts talking about me, 170, but that's not exactly it.
Oliveira already has a win over Chandler, winning by second-round TKO in May 2021 for the vacant lightweight title. The former lightweight champion is coming off a narrow loss to Arman Tsarukyan in a No. 1 contender's bout at UFC 300. In addition to that, he finished Beneil Darish with a first-round TKO at UFC 289.
