Minnetonka senior forward Hagen Burroughs and Chanhassen senior goaltender Cam Hendrickson are former Minnetonka youth hockey teammates and were both recognized for their on-ice talent on Sunday.
A West Metro power duo of sorts, both won the most coveted awards for their respective positions. Burrows was named the 40th Mr. Hockey, and Hendrickson won the Frank Brimsek Award for senior goaltender of the year.
Burrows, who was named the Star Tribune's Metro Player of the Year, led the Skippers to the championship game in Round 2. Sunday's Mr. Hockey Award banquet with teammates at the St. Paul River Center was a small consolation after a 2-1 loss in the sectional final game.
“It's still difficult,” Burrows said. “For me, it was more important to take the team further. This is definitely a bit of a silver lining.”
Burroughs, who signed with the University of Denver, led the Skippers in assists (38) and points (57).
“As a competitor, it's definitely very motivating to go right back to work and try to win,” he said. “Unfortunately, I no longer have a chance to win with his M on the front of my jersey.”
Other Mr. Hockey finalists are Javon Moore (Minnetonka), Jackson Nevers (Edina), Carson Pilgrim (Warlord), Nolan Rodd (White Bear Lake), John Stout (Minnetonka), Gavin They were Uhlenkamp (Chanhassen) and Noah Arness (Roseau). , Rhys Wallin (Wayzata) and Lewis Wehrman (Providence Academy).
“His game has developed beyond just his scoring ability,” Minnetonka coach Sean Goldsworthy said of Burroughs.
Burrows lost to Hendrickson in the Section 2 final, and Hendrickson made his state tournament debut along with his Storm teammates. Chanhassen lost to Edina 2-1 in Saturday night's final game.
After starting the National Hockey League season sluggishly on the bench with the Chicago Steel, Hendrickson went 23-6 with a 1.01 goals-against average and stopped 95.1% of the shots he faced.
“My teammates have been great through all of this,” he said. “I was happy because my sons were persistent to come back. We all kept our word and tried our best.”
Other finalists for the Frank Brimsek Award were Hunter Bauer (Minnetonka) and AJ Reiertz (Proctor).
The Mr. Hockey Award and the Frank Brimsek Award are selected by a committee of NHL scouts, junior scouts, coaches and media members from across Minnesota. Both awards are presented by the Minnesota All-Sports Alliance.
