COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Two international soccer players stopped by Kyle Field on Wednesday to discuss the upcoming game at the stadium with leaders.
This is a friendly match between Brazil and Mexico's professional men's soccer teams on June 8 for the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa America tournament. Legendary athletes such as Brazil's Emerson da Rosa and Mexico's Pavel Pardo also participated, but it was a peaceful event. Friends told media groups that their relationships changed once he was on the field.
The event was hosted by Gabe Gabor, media relations officer for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, who talked about how this is more than just a game, comparing it to the Super Bowl.
“We have people who buy tickets from 30 different states. They drive out and spend a weekend visiting 30 different states. There will be fans following, so it's a truly international and national event, and as you can see this week, the games are just one part of it. “There will be player appearances, autograph sessions, etc. So don't think it's just going to be 90 minutes. It's going to be an entire event here throughout the week,” he said.
This will be the first time an international soccer match will be held at Kyle Field. This is not the only unique event that will be held this summer or June. A concert will be held a few days after the team leaves town. Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts said he hopes this becomes the norm.
“In college athletics in general, and college football in particular, great assets are often vacant outside of the seventh inning on Saturdays in the fall most of the time,” he says. “This is a tough job for our staff, but you have to combine it with the fact that this is not the only thing we are doing this summer. The fact that we're going to do it is something new for us. I really don't think it's going to be out of the norm here or in any other college sports world. We have to think differently. With an entrepreneurial spirit, we must think beyond just George Strait's achievements and opportunities in terms of profitability, the excellence and the focus that students and young people have on our institutions. I think there are ancillary benefits to alignment in direction, which is a big deal for us.”
