“We aimed for participants to leave feeling empowered and knowing they had very basic, practical skills.”
Our goal is a strong and resilient Jewish community,” said Matthew Sikora, owner of TRUE Martial Arts. With a mission to spread safety and security throughout the community, TRUE Martial Arts, a Jewish-owned martial arts school with locations in West Bloomfield and Birmingham, offers self-defense classes to Jewish youth across the state. It offers.
“My children learned in true martial arts at an early age. I was very impressed with Matt Sikora and his team, their philosophy, warmth, and leadership ability,” said Rabbi Aaron Starr. When asked who performs self-martial arts, he said: – Shirley Zedek's Defense Class for Youth. “There was no question that he was the person I wanted for the Shirley Zedek teens.”
Rabbi Starr explained: “Given the rising tide of anti-Semitism in our country, Annie Klinger, youth counselor at Shirley Zedek Congregation, and I are working to provide teens with physical, emotional and We have created a series of learning opportunities to help you feel spiritually safe.”
Last month's seminar at Shirley Zedek “included a brief lecture on situational awareness before teaching the teens basic self-defense techniques. The teens were then given some practice.” I was given a pad to use,” Starr said.
Sikora said: “We aimed for participants to walk away feeling confident and empowered to deal with potential threats, knowing they had very basic and practical skills. Beyond physical techniques, we want them to gain confidence in their ability to protect themselves and others in a variety of situations, and develop a mindset of positivity and resilience.”
Mission complete! Starr agreed: “While everyone enjoyed the opportunity to develop and practice self-defense techniques on the pads, I think it also took away meaningful memories of situational awareness.”
A few weeks ago, TRUE Martial Arts attended the BBYO Michigan Spring Conference and offered a Krav Maga seminar to BBYO teens. BBYO teens, with support from staff, are leading the charge in planning his annual two-day competition at Camp Tamarack. The convention offers a variety of programs each year.
“Some teens suggested Krav Maga in an effort to provide an activity that was active, engaging, and included some take-home benefits,” said Audrey Bloomberg, BBYO Michigan regional director. Krav Maga is an Israeli martial art developed for the Israel Defense Forces. He is known for teaching real-life, practical self-defense techniques.
At the convention, a one-hour Krav Maga seminar was well-attended, with more than 40 teens attending. The seminar included information and handouts about the origins of Krav Maga, as well as a hands-on component where teens could practice and role-play.
“The teens were able to learn something new and develop skills that can be applied to real life,” Bloomberg said.
The convention allowed Jewish youth to come together as a community and learn something new. “It’s great to know that we have these resources in our community. We have professionals in our community who not only have these skills, but are willing to teach others in our community.” I have a home,” Bloomberg said.
TRUE Martial Arts wants to continue teaching Jewish teens about self-defense. “In our classes, we teach Jewish teens to take charge of their own safety and well-being. By learning practical techniques to protect themselves, participants gain confidence and Gain confidence. This allows participants to incorporate these skills and mindsets into their daily lives and become more proactive rather than reactive. By contributing to a safer and more resilient Jewish community, this empowerment extends beyond the event itself,” Sikora said.
