University of Kansas Football Club Recruitment
The Kansas State football team added to its growing 2025 recruiting class Tuesday night when three-star running back John Kelly committed to the Jayhawks next year.
“I'm very happy, especially since this is something I've dreamed of since I was a little baby when I first started playing football,” he told JayhawkSlant.com's John Kirby.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder attends Cypress Christian School in the Houston area, where he also runs track and field.
Kelly reported receiving offers from schools such as Arizona, Duke, Houston, Missouri and Texas Tech.
“I knew Kansas State was the right school for me because I think my personality would be a good fit for Kansas State,” he told Kirby. “…I just knew the University of Kansas was the one because I didn’t have these relationships with other universities.”
When he arrives in 2025, he will join a college running back room that is expected to include Daniel Hishoe Jr., Seveon Morrison, Johnny Thompson Jr. and Harry Stewart III when he arrives.
The Jayhawks have added young running backs in recent classes, but lost early enrollee Red Martell to the transfer portal earlier this month.
Kelly is the fourth player in the 2025 class to commit, joining quarterback David McComb, athlete Malachi Carvey and most recently offensive lineman Anderson Kopp. As with last season, recruiting will likely ramp up even more in 2025, especially when KU begins inviting visiting high school players in June.
Kelly's pledge signifies the appointment of Jonathan Wallace, a running backs coach in the Houston area, who was quoted by an unnamed high school coach in the area in a February article in The Athletic about local hiring. received praise from. He praised head coach Lance Leipold, calling Wallace “honest, very personable and has a good vibe.”
“We talked almost every day, and he's someone I trust with my future,” Kelly told Kirby. “He's the player I want to play for. He doesn't want to play for anyone else.”
