DEVONSHIRE, Bermuda (WCMH) — Dublin track and field star and world champion Abby Steiner is starting to get back into shape with her sights set on glory at the Paris Olympics.
Steiner, who burst onto the global track scene in 2022, sustained a bone spur in his left heel in 2023, requiring surgery. Her recovery period kept her off the track until early April, but on Sunday she was back to winning ways.
Steiner won the 200m race at the Bermuda Grand Prix in a time of 22.71 seconds, making him his second consecutive 200m race win on Bermuda.
Steiner will be one of the favorites to compete in the 200-meter race at the U.S. Olympic Trials, which begins June 21 in Eugene, Oregon. The 200m final begins on June 27th, with the final set for June 29th. She hopes to qualify for her first Olympics, and she will aim to win a medal in the 200 meters and win the home relay gold medal for Team USA.
On his way to the college championships, Steiner set an NCAA record in the 200 meters at 21.80 seconds in 2022 while at the University of Kentucky. Later that year, she won the American 200m title in Eugene and followed that up with a fifth-place finish at the 2022 World Championship finals. She helped the U.S. relay team win two gold medals at the 2022 World Championships in the 4x100m and 4x400m finals.
Last year, the 24-year-old from Dublin finished fourth in the 200m at the US Championships, but did not compete at the World Championships in Budapest due to injury. She holds the American indoor 200m and 300m records. You can watch Steiner's games at the U.S. Olympic Trials this summer on her NBC4.
NBC4 will also provide live coverage during the Paris Olympics, which kicks off with the opening ceremony on July 26. The contest begins on July 24th.
