If you're interested in getting active and learning self-defense, check out: martial arts clubrun by senior psychology major Joy Phillips.
love for art
Phillips founded the club in the fall of 2023. As president and founder of the club, she is responsible for leading all meetings. Meetings include teaching and planning games to create a fun space for everyone. But Phillips' love for martial arts began even before the club was founded.
“I joined a homeschool karate program when I was in fifth grade,” Phillips said. “After the person who was teaching it graduated, he invited us to his studio and it was just my sisters and I who kept it going. We just kept up with the program and In the end, my mother joined us and we all earned our black belts.”
Martial arts is more than just a physical activity. It's an opportunity to learn an important lesson.
“What I love about martial arts is that it not only teaches you about life and how to persevere, but also how to relate to others,” Phillips said. “One of the best parts of martial arts is getting back up after you've been knocked down, whether it's a takedown, sparring, or grappling. It's going to hurt, but you have no choice but to keep going. Life is hard. We keep moving forward and keep going. You have to take every punch that comes your way.[…] Martial arts taught me to keep fighting even when I get hurt and to overcome life's challenges. ”
Building a community
The martial arts club meets every Thursday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Soubiro 202 Everyone is welcome. Phillips begins meetings with a “huddle,” giving members time to interact with each other. After this, it's time to practice, working on boxing techniques, combos, kicks, self-defense, and takedowns.
“The goal of the club was for me to be able to share my love of martial arts with others, while also creating a space where people could come together and participate in the community,” Phillips said. “I loved seeing people come in on a weekly basis and share their passion for martial arts. It inspires people to pursue what they are passionate about and put themselves out there in a positive way. I hope so.”
