Jaime Munguia has a chance to pull off an upset against superstar Canelo Alvarez.
It is believed that Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) was chosen by Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) because he feels he is a genius, and has four superpowers against Canelo. There's no need to worry about losing the middleweight title. He headlined May 4th at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with him.
Advantages of Munguia
Mungiao, 27, is seven years younger than Cunaero and some believe he has better conditioning, reflexes and better punch resistance. Perhaps Munguia's main advantage over Canelo is his ability to throw more punches without tiring.
Canelo hasn't been able to throw a ton of pitches until now due to cardiovascular limitations. He needs regular breaks after throwing shots, and like many older fighters, Canelo tends to take breaks with his back to the ropes.
That habit was used in Canelo's loss to Dmitry Bivol in 2022. As Canelo rested against the ropes, Bivol attacked Canelo with sustained combinations. Canelo was too tired so he couldn't throw back and covered and waited for Bivol to go down.
Munguia has no intention of backing down even if he drives Canelo against the ropes. He will continue to land his punches until he does something meaningful to back off or the referee steps in and stops the fight. There is a possibility. Canelo is 33 years old, closer to 40 in my opinion.
If Canelo can't deal damage with counters, there's a good chance Munguia will overwhelm him with his relentless punches.
Canelo's counterpunch threat
Canelo's experience fighting at the highest level will be important in this fight. He completed the race against a better opponent than Munguia. Munguia has been protected by his promoters and kept out of harm's way by the top fighters in the three weight classes he achieved during his 11-year career.
Canelo's counter punches allow Munguia to take advantage of the ultra-aggressive fighter. If Munguia throws a lot of punches against Canelo, there's a chance he can counter punch and stop him.
Munguia still needs to be aggressive, but not reckless in doing so. If Munguia can pick the right moments and be aggressive, he has a chance to win.
