West Ham's talks with Ruben Amorim over a possible summer managerial appointment were a failure, the manager has admitted.
This time last month, the former Sporting manager was thought to be the frontrunner to take the Liverpool job. He won the Portuguese Championship in the 2020-21 season and is likely to repeat the feat this year.
Amorim was hoping the Reds would make him an offer, but his efforts backfired. Clearly they have lost interest and Arne Slott is only looking away from managing Liverpool next season.
However, the Anfield outfit is not the only Premier League club to be linked with the 39-year-old manager. Finally forced to do so, Amorim recently traveled to London to negotiate with West Ham.
Will the trip to London decide Amorim's fate?
Once this season ends, the Hammers hope to hire new management and make changes. Their league record has not been very good and it is almost certain that David Moyes will be in charge at the end of this season.
If they are successful in acquiring Amorim, it would be a great deal. It is no secret that the Portuguese is generally considered to be one of the best young managers in European football.
It seems like more and more people are interested in marrying Ruben Amorim, so it seems like he won't be with her for another season. At the same time, he has not completely completed his mission in Lisbon.
He is now four games away from winning his second Portuguese league title with Sporting. The Lisbon native has been with the club since March 2020 and currently leads the team with seven points.
During this trip, Sporting were at a pivotal point in their pursuit of the Portuguese title. As a result, Amorim has had a rough time in talks with Premier League sides.
What did Amorim say?
Therefore, the Portuguese coach freely admitted that he should have thought twice before going on this trip. He subsequently apologized to the club and Sporting supporters for his inappropriate behavior. The former Benfica man regrets going to London for negotiations while he was still on a Primeira Liga salary.
“So let's get the elephant out of the room. Then let's talk for once. First of all, the club knew about my trip. It's important and it's game-changing.” he told reporters.
“So tell me about the cloak of secrecy that has covered this trip. I secretly parked outside, snuck past 15 people to take pictures, got on a plane, and brought some of this stuff home.” It was all happening behind the scenes at the club, but that didn't happen.
“Obviously my trip was a mistake, the timing was completely wrong and it didn't seem right at the time.'' As I said at the beginning, it was a mistake. They can overwhelm the team. I already removed players from the team for much less. That was my mistake. You have to accept it and live with it.”
