Former Florida State wide receiver Johnny Wilson was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixth round, 185th overall, becoming the eighth Seminole player selected thus far in the 2024 NFL Draft. Wilson entered the draft as the 28th wide receiver at his position.
Wilson started his career at Arizona State and didn't play much there before transferring to Tallahassee and becoming Jordan Travis' go-to receiver. In two seasons with the Garnet and Gold, Wilson had 84 catches for 1,514 yards and seven touchdowns. Even though he was plagued by various injuries in the 2023 season and missed several games, he might have otherwise approached 100 catches in two seasons.
A few scouts believe that Wilson would have a better career as an NFL tight end, but his 40-yard dash time of 4.52, just under 6 feet 7 inches, and shuttle run of 4.11 in the testing process were both very poor. Those are impressive numbers, and he should be. Either way, he'll need to be more consistent with his hands, as his career drop rate of 12.8% (per PFF) is definitely a concern.
Wilson's draft range was the widest of any draft pick. Pro Football Focus' Trevor Sikkema had Wilson in his top 90, while many scouts expected him to go in the fifth or sixth round. Someone is going to fall in love with his size and potential, and that's what happened with his draft pick here.
