Lisca hockey team to close, club faces uncertain future

A hockey club has been forced to close several of its teams as it prepares to say goodbye to its home base of more than 40 years.
Lisca Hockey Club is set to close its junior division and potentially a second senior team after being forced to relocate from Lisca Leisure Centre.
A club spokesperson said. argus Losing these teams “would be a huge financial blow to the club and a huge loss to the team as a whole.”

In July 2023, Lisca Hockey Club was told, without prior consultation, that its astroturf hockey pitch would be replaced by a 4G pitch, which was unsuitable for hockey.
There are currently two hockey grounds in Caerphilly County Borough that Hockey Wales has approved for play to league standards, one at the Sault Noake Leisure Center in Ystrad Mainach and one in Lisca.
The club, which describes itself as a “family,” plans to move to Sunoake Leisure Center, nine miles from its current home.

In a positive twist to a sad event, the community was invited to attend the club's final training session on Wednesday 24th April.
A Lisca Hockey Club spokesperson said: “Istrad Mainach Pitch is the home ground of the Sue Noake Hockey Team and is not too far for the senior players who drive, but a long distance for most of the juniors and youngsters.''Parent Lift Elderly people rely on them and come to train and play.
“We looked at grounds close to Lisca, such as Bassaleg School and Rougemont School, but cost was a big factor, hockey is a restricted sport on many school grounds, and this ground is not available outside school hours. Due to the noise pollution to surrounding residences.

“We have considered other pitches, but they do not meet the requirements for practice and play.
“We are looking at further funding opportunities to support the relocation and help the club continue financially.
“With this move we will definitely lose our junior division and possibly our second senior team. “This is not only a huge financial blow to our club, but also a huge loss to our team as a whole. It will be a loss.”
