Planning for the historic opening of the Seine continues…for now.
Paris touted its first-ever opening ceremony in the countdown to hosting the first Summer Olympics since 1924, with athletes parading in boats along the Seine River instead of entering the stadium.
The plan is still in place, but the French government has expressed concerns that adjustments may need to be made, according to the Associated Press.
French President Emmanuel Macron said last week that organizers may hold a more traditional opening ceremony at the Stade de France due to safety concerns.
President Macron said “Plan B and Plan C” were in place in case the security risks were deemed too high.
With large crowds and more than 100 world leaders expected to attend, it's no wonder French authorities are trying to be as cautious as possible.
Organizers insist that planning for the opening ceremony, to be held along the Seine, is still in full swing, but the coming months could be interesting to watch.
Gabby Douglas begins her comeback
One of the most accomplished gymnasts in American history is set to begin an unprecedented comeback this weekend.
Gabby Douglas, the 2012 London Olympics individual all-around champion and three-time Olympic gold medalist, will return to competition on Saturday at the American Classic in Katy, Texas.
This will be Douglas' first competition since the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Douglas, now 28, will have to overcome many obstacles if he ultimately makes the U.S. team for this summer's Paris Olympics.
However, Douglas said he misses competing and is willing to give it a try. Saturday's game should be a good barometer of her chances of being selected for the U.S. team.
Overview of wrestling trials
Last weekend, the United States Olympic Wrestling Trials were held in State College, Pennsylvania, with 13 wrestlers winning their respective weight classes and advancing to Paris.
There are five other weight classes in which the U.S. did not qualify, and the five winners in those weight classes will qualify for Paris next month in a last-chance qualifying tournament in Turkey.
Notable highlights include:
-
Aaron Brooks defeated current Olympic gold medalist David Taylor to win the 86 kg weight class. In fact, Brooks defeated Taylor twice in a row to qualify for Paris. Before his first loss to Brooks, Taylor had not lost to an American wrestler in seven years.
-
Helen Maroulis became the first American woman to qualify for three consecutive Olympic Games in the 57 kg weight class. Maroulis won gold at the 2016 Rio Games and bronze at the Tokyo Games.
-
Kyle Snyder, a 28-year-old 97kg athlete who won gold in Rio and silver in Tokyo, qualified for his third consecutive Olympics. He became the 11th American wrestler to accomplish that feat.
-
Paris is in Paris. Mason Paris, who won a bronze medal in the world championship heavyweight division and wrestled at the University of Michigan, earned his first Olympic berth.
