Los Angeles – LMU Women's Soccer is proud to welcome Stephen Meriwether to its coaching staff for the upcoming 2024 season. With an illustrious career spanning more than 13 years, Meriwether brings a wealth of expertise in coaching and player development.
”We are excited to add Stephen to our coaching staff. Stephen has a background as a goalkeeper in the USSF and he is an A-license coach. He has played for me in the past and even coached with me on the staff,” Chamides said. “He developed one of our previous goaltenders into a first-team All-American. He knows his stuff and is a quality person. Stephen has set our standards and the way we work. We look forward to working with him. Welcome to The Bluff Stephen!
The All-American player Chamides mentioned was former Golden Eagles goaltender Mike. Baygarten. Beygarten and the defense set a school record in 2013 by allowing just 12 goals, but followed that up with a record-breaking season in 2014 by allowing just nine goals.
Meriwether's coaching journey reflects his commitment to excellence and player development at various levels of competition. Meriwether, who earned a bachelor's degree in communications from California State University, Los Angeles, includes a USSF National A Coaching License and a NSCAA GK Coaching License. Coach Chamides noted how difficult it is to find people who can fill these roles, and said he will be a great asset going forward.
His collegiate coaching experience includes serving as women's assistant coach at Marymount California University, among others., is the men's assistant coach at CSU in Los Angeles. During his time at Marymount, Merriweather helped the Mariners win their first Round of 32 and Round of 20.
Beyond college coaching, Meriwether has made significant contributions to high school and club soccer. As Peninsula High School's varsity soccer coach, he transformed the program and oversaw all aspects of its success, including scheduling, training, and budget management.
Mr Meriwether's dedication extends to club soccer, where he was Director of Operations and Director of Goalkeeping at Sand and Surf Soccer Club, and held coaching positions at FRAM Soccer Club and Exiles Soccer Club.
Additionally, Meriwether's commitment to education includes: This is evidenced by the experience of a teacher at Vista Grande Elementary School who taught computer and physical education skills to elementary students.
In his new role, Meriwether will undoubtedly enrich LMU's coaching staff. Expertise to foster player development and maintain organizational standards of excellence.
