RUPERT — Minico senior Valentin Martinez Jr.'s dream of becoming a college soccer player started at an early age.
This has always been a goal since he started attending local recreational programs at the age of four. So it was a big moment Thursday when he signed to play soccer on scholarship at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Oregon.
“It's very special,” Martinez Jr. said. times news. “I've dreamed of this moment for a long time since I was a child. It's pretty special to me.”
Martinez's journey began with local recreation programs and then progressed to the Snake River Strikers travel program to Evolution Academy in Burley. His father, Valentin Martinez Sr., who loved soccer, also encouraged him.
Valentin Martinez Sr. died in a work accident near the end of Valentin Martinez Jr.'s sophomore year. Part of the reason Valentin Jr. continues to play is because he thinks that's what his father would want him to do.

“My father is very important to me,” Valentin Martinez Jr. said. “From the moment I was born, he was just there for me. He cared for me, played with me, and taught me how to be the child, student, and player I am today. ”
Martinez Jr. is an offensive midfielder and was named to the 2023 All-Great Basin Conference second team. The Spartans struggled, going 0-12-2, but Martinez wanted to make sure his team stayed together. He didn't just think of them as teammates, he thought of them as family. Head coach Will Figueroa's level of dedication was outstanding.
“During his time at Minico, Valen demonstrated undeniable talent and an unwavering dedication to the game,” Figueroa said. “You guys saw it too. Day in and day out. Valen gave his all every time he stepped on the field. His effort and tenacity were evident in every game.
Martinez Jr. chose Treasure Valley over Blue Mountain Community College and another opportunity in Spain. While playing for the Chukers, he double majored in biology and business, and plans to attend dental school after his football career is over. This is the same path as his favorite soccer player, Hugo Sanchez, who earned a degree in dentistry while playing for the Mexican national team in the 1970s and his 1980s.
