SAUGATUCK — Neve Rewa and Jen Schock formed a very dynamic duo in the SAC showdown against the Saugatuck girls soccer team, which visited Watervliet on Monday, April 22nd.
Shock scored two goals and Rewa scored one and assisted on the other to lead the Trail Blazers to a 4-2 victory, extending Saugatuck's undefeated streak to five.
Cece Atkins scored Saugatuck's other goal. Alina Martinsson contributed two assists and Kennedy Gustafsson contributed one.
“Overall, it was a solid, consistent game for us,” Saugatuck first-year coach Jim Theis said. “We limited their chances a little. We counterattacked well and were able to control the field.”
This was especially pleased with the effort considering the fact that the team had to make changes due to injuries.
“One of our speedy wings, Mallory Huss, was injured last week, so we had to change some things to compensate for that,” Theis said. “Sophomore Avery Smith was particularly strong in both our center and wing midfielder positions.”
In addition to providing offensive assists, Gustafsson also played 60 minutes in goal. She made five saves in the shutout.
Virginia Cernugel played in goal for the final 20 minutes and made one save.
Three days ago, Saugatuck built a 4-1 lead at halftime and cruised to a 5-3 victory over Delton.
Rewa and Schock each also had two points and one assist. CeCe Atkins scored one goal and Smith added an assist.
Cernugel defended his goal throughout the game, making three saves.
