The U.S. women's soccer team will play its final send-off match against Costa Rica in July before heading to Paris for the 2024 Olympics.
The game will be played on July 16th at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. (7:30 p.m. ET). This is part of the USWNT's four-game preparation for the Olympic Games under new coach Emma Hayes.
Hayes is expected to join the team in May after completing his spell at Chelsea. The first game with an English female player in charge will be against South Korea on June 1st at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado.
The United States will face South Korea again on June 4th at Allianz Stadium in St. Paul, Minnesota, before the team moves to Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey on July 13th to take on neighboring Mexico.
U.S. Soccer announced in a statement Tuesday that the rosters for games in New Jersey and Washington, D.C., will include members of the Olympic team.
The USWNT has faced Costa Rica 17 times, winning each time. Their last meeting took place at the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship, where they won 3-0 in the quarterfinals with goals from Emily Sonnet, Mallory Swanson, and Ashley Sanchez.
Olympic
The USWNT is in a difficult group for the Paris Games with 2016 Olympic champions Germany, Australia and Zambia.
They begin their Olympic campaign against Zambia on July 25, nine days after their friendly against Costa Rica.
At the last Olympics in Tokyo in 2021, the United States won a bronze medal, but came back empty-handed at Rio 2016 in 2016. The United States has won four gold medals in women's soccer at the Olympics, the last time being at the 2012 London Games.
In an interview last week, U.S. national team forward Alex Morgan said the team wants to bounce back from the heartbreak at the 2023 World Cup and return to the top of the Olympic podium at this year's Paris Games.
The USWNT suffered their worst result in last year's Women's World Cup, losing to Sweden in the Round of 16 on penalties. The loss ended any hopes of a world title “three-peat” and raised concerns that the team's best days were behind them.
As athletes prepare for the Olympics, they will be keen to aim for gold in Paris. They have been on a roll lately, winning the CONCACAF W Gold Cup and She Believes Cup this year under the guidance of interim coach Twyla Kilgore.
