ROY — Roy High School boys soccer had a good practice Monday that carried over into Tuesday's game against Bonneville.
David Rangel scored twice in the first half and goalies Colby Frogger and Xander Allred kept the Lakers at bay as the Royals posted a 3-0 shutout victory and ended their Region 5 season. dominated the series.
“This game was really important for us. We've been practicing for this game the whole time,” Rangel said. “I knew this team was a good team.”
The Royals (7-3, Region 5) dominated from the start and finally found the back of the net on a breakaway goal from Rangel in the 24th minute.
“We practiced runs and made runs in open space,” Rangel said. “We came out and Boston (Risk) connected with me. I was going to go to the back post but I saw him (the keeper) slip off so I went to the front post instead. ”
This situation continued until the end of the second half, when Rangel added another goal in the 36th minute, making it 2-0 at halftime.
“Scoring as many goals as we can in the first half will set us up for the second half of the game,” Rangel said. “In our minds, it's still 0-0. Tyson (Johansen) saw that through ball and just threw it in.”
Still wary of the Lakers (6-4, 6-4), Roy wanted more, and Corben Schuffenhauer's goal off an assist from Johansen in the 47th minute made it 3-0. Pushed up.
“At half-time we talked about how a 2-0 lead was the most dangerous. The game wasn't over yet. It was important to score another goal. When we scored the third goal, we were ready for the game. It was pretty much set up,” Rangel said.
Roy's win makes the Region 5 race a little more clear. With four games remaining, the Royals sit in second place, one game behind Box Elder and one game behind Bonneville and Bountiful.
“We had a game plan and we played to it. We worked a lot on distribution and through balls, getting the ball to our forwards,” Roy coach Craig Charlesworth said. Told. “We had some chances that we didn't miss. I think we could have scored more.”
Charlesworth stuck to his plan to have Frogger in net in the first half, then switched to Allred after the break. But as good as they are, if defenseman Roy had played on Tuesday, they could have sat on the sideline and the Royals would still have won.
“I felt very comfortable today and didn't feel too threatened,” Charlesworth said. “It was a good game for us as we beat Bonneville by a landslide. They are very tough, so we are happy to play against them.”
Bonneville had just one shot in the first half, and it hit the side of the goal. The Lakers had their only chance to score in the second half, but they missed a penalty kick.
“We had a lot of stuff. That's kind of the key to what we're doing. If we have the ball, our defense doesn't have as much of a job to do. Charlesworth said. “Their number 10 (Ashton Duran) is a very good player and as soon as he gets the ball he looks for him. I made sure not to take over.
“Our message was to focus on defense, push the ball forward, and when we have a chance to score, we'll put the ball in,” Charlesworth said. “The most important thing for us was not to concede any goals.”
Rangel echoed his coach's sentiments.
“3-0 is better than 3-1. It's better not to let us score,” he said.
