ESPN.com reports on how heavyweight veterans Andy Ruiz and Jarrell Miller will face off on the Terrence Crawford vs. Aylem Mardimov card set for August in Los Angeles, with Isaac – “Pitbull” Cruz and Jose Valenzuela are also scheduled to compete. And it's safe to say that the announcement of this heavyweight matchup raised a few eyebrows.
Who wins this? Meanwhile, former heavyweight champion Ruiz (35-2, 22 KOs), who hasn't fought in years, is actually only two months away from fighting Miller. Meanwhile, convicted drug swindler Miller suffered a stoppage loss to Daniel Dubois, but in that fight, Miller tipped in at 333 pounds and lost the fight. Ruiz, a Mexican-American, weighs in at over 280 pounds for his return fight against Anthony Joshua and is on the verge of topping his scale at the fight weigh-in.
When Lewis and Miller step into the ring, their combined weight is expected to be more than 550 pounds. It is hoped that both fighters have trained properly or at least trained properly for this match. Lewis has arguably the fastest hands in the heavyweight division when he's on fire. In fact, Ruiz is a year younger at 34 and is also the more talented boxer of the two and should probably win this fight relatively easily. If he stays fit and has enough motivation.
Luis looked decent in his last fight against Luis Ortiz in September 2022, but the former champion dropped Ortiz three times en route to the UD victory. Miller has never really won a meaningful fight. Of course, Miller took a shot at AJ in June 2019, which was a hot test and really hit the jackpot when Ruiz stepped in on short notice and scored an upset stoppage victory over Joshua. But that was a long time ago, and Lewis has never looked so dangerous, so motivated and so hungry since then.
Is there still time for Lewis to make up for lost time by beating Miller and returning to a top-level team? Will the chance to land the crazy Saudi money that has been on offer recently ignite Lewis' engine?
It could be a fun match if Lewis and Miller fight, even though many fans will wonder why Miller keeps getting opportunities for big fights. There's likely to be quite a bit of trash talk going into the match, most of it coming from New Yorker Miller, who is currently 26-1-1 (ranked 22nd). As for who would win, Lewis would have the upper hand, but if he is not in good physical and mental condition…anything could happen.
