The San Antonio Spurs are reportedly not interested in trading Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young, according to NBC Sports' Curt Herrin.
According to Herrin, the Spurs don't think Young is a good fit to line up alongside Victor Wembaneyama, but they may have interest in Hawks guard Dejounte Murray, who played in San Antonio from 2016 to 2022. That's what it means.
This report comes as San Antonio is rumored to be pursuing Golden State Warriors point guard Chris Paul. NBA insider Marc Stein reported Saturday that the Spurs could be a potential suitor for Paul if he partes ways with the Warriors this summer.
“If Paul and the Warriors part ways, the team to watch is San Antonio,” Stein wrote. “Amid early personnel rumors, Spurs decide to pursue veteran know-how on a short-term deal basis and provide expected Rookie of the Year Victor Wembaneyama with more experienced support this year.'' , could emerge as a potential suitor for Paul.''2.
After one year with the Warriors, Paul could become a free agent if Golden State doesn't exercise his $30 million player option for the 2024-25 season by June 28. The veteran of the Los Angeles Clippers' Lob City offense could be the perfect player in his second season with Wenbanyama.
Young will not be a free agent this offseason, but could be on the trade market after the Hawks miss this year's postseason. Many NBA insiders believe Atlanta will move on from Young this offseason, including Stein, who reported that he has “increasing confidence” that Young will be traded this summer.
“There is also a widespread belief in many parts of the league that Atlanta would actually prefer shopping Young,” Stein wrote.
Since pairing Young with Murray for the 2022-23 season, the Hawks made one playoff appearance this year, finishing in the first round and finishing the season with a record of 41-41.
Young is averaging 10.8 assists per game this season and could be a solid option for a team in the market for a point guard. Trading him could also give Atlanta a key piece for next season's development and a valuable pick to help rebuild.
