SAUGUS — The Board of Selectmen unanimously approved the opening of DS Muay Thai Squad, a Muay Thai studio, at 184 Broadway.
“We look forward to working with the community in promoting the welfare and excellence of martial arts,” owner David Silva said in a letter to the board.
Silva explained to the board that he opened the gym a year and a half ago, but that he shares the space with another martial arts business. But he said interest in Muay Thai is now growing so rapidly that he rents his own space to accommodate practitioners who are interested in him.
“It's very interesting,” Chair Debra Panetta said. “It's a different sound than anything I've heard before.”
After the meeting, Silva provided details about his background and why he thinks Muay Thai is so important.
Silva began studying martial arts at the age of 15 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He then competed in several amateur competitions, which he called a “milestone” that solidified his commitment to Muay Thai and its principles.
Mr. Silva also worked as a firefighter in Brazil for nine years. He said the experience instilled in him “responsibility, discipline and community service,” and that his teachings are “deeply rooted in the ethos of our Muay Thai studio.”
“Our studio is more than just a training ground, it's a community dedicated to personal growth and empowerment,” Silva said.
Silva praised Muay Thai training, saying:In its transformative potential. ”
“In addition to the physical benefits, practicing Muay Thai promotes mental resilience, emotional well-being, and a sense of belonging,” Silva said. “Enabling individuals to overcome challenges, build confidence, and live healthier, more fulfilling lives.”
Silva's Muay Thai studio will be one of many martial arts studios in the city, but likely the first of its kind. Muay Thai is a kickboxing style that uses elbows and knees to attack and originated in Thailand.
“This world needs more David Silvas,” Select Board Vice Chairman Jeff Cicolini said after reading a letter submitted by residents testifying to Silva's character.
Silva said she also aims to give back to the community by offering at least two free classes at her studio to first responders.
The DS Muay Thai team will be open from 9am to 9pm every day except Sunday. Closed on Sundays.
