BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana State football held its spring game Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.
With the modified scoring system, the offense outscored the defense 34-25 in two 15-minute periods. Thursday was the first chance to see the new Hoosiers under head coach Curt Cignetti. That roster includes many newcomers.
Below is a summary of how Indiana's first and second team offense and defense lined up in the spring game. The depth chart is subject to change as players are still going through summer training and fall camp to impress the coaching staff and earn more playing time. . You can also enter the spring transfer portal during the second window from April 16 to 30, and there is no deadline to choose a new school.
Cininetti did not specify which positions may be filled through the portal, but he is looking to add talent.
“I'm looking for the best that I can,” Cininetti said. “We're not looking for third-team players.”

Injury record: Wide receiver EJ Williams Jr. (23 receptions, 281 yards in 2023) was in uniform Thursday but did not play. Cininetti said on April 2 that he was suffering from a foot injury. James Madison offensive lineman Nick Kidwell also did not play due to injury and was sidelined all spring.

And on special teams, Derek McCormick and Alejandro Quintero rotated as place kickers, all trying to score extra points. McCormick attempted Indiana's only field goal, but missed from 51 yards remaining. Indiana opted not to punt at all Thursday, but that job will likely be secured by James Evans, a third-year starter under coach Tom Allen.
Going forward, Cinetti and his staff plan to welcome a few recruits to Thursday's spring game before heading out to recruit in May. Current players will continue to practice with strength and conditioning coach Derek Owings until May 20, when the summer program begins, Cinetti said.
Cininetti believes the team has made progress during offseason training and spring practice and expects that to continue.
“Typically what we see in the summer is just a big jump,” Cininetti said. “I'm hopeful that's the case. And we took another leap forward in fall camp. I think the biggest thing right now is we need to strengthen some key positions on this football team a little bit.” ”
