Lapeer — Lapeer High School senior Ella Dumas signed her national letter of intent Thursday to play women's hockey at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. Dumas also considered Central Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University, she said.
“UM-Dearborn had a great community, good coaches, and a great environment,” Dumas said of why he chose the university. She has been playing hockey since she was four and a half years old. She also played varsity hockey, JV tennis and powderpuff football at Lapeer High School.
The business major said her biggest challenge in college will be a higher level of competition and a new environment, but she is more excited than nervous. Dumas said she is very excited about the new challenge, but she is not too nervous because she is familiar with the coaches and staff at Dearborn College.
Dumas wanted to thank his family, coaches Brent Bernard and John McMeiron, friends, past teammates and past athletic trainers.
Dumas, who played for Honeybaked, was a three-time state champion and was on the Tier II 16U national championship team, most notably as the leading scorer that season. She also scored a “Michigan” goal in Chicago.
Dumas also noted that she is dedicated to her family and most importantly, her sport.
