Another PWHL Montreal vs. PWHL Toronto match broke records.
The teams met Saturday afternoon at the Bell Center, home of the Montreal Canadiens, breaking the record for the most attendance for a women's professional hockey game at 21,105.
The previous attendance record was 19,285, set on February 16 when Toronto hosted Montreal in the Battle of Bay Street at Scotiabank Arena, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“Today, in the city where so many hockey milestones have been achieved, we celebrated the largest gathering of PWHL fans in the league’s short history,” said PWHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations. Jayna Hefford said. “Montreal's hockey community has always come to our league, and today was an opportunity to celebrate their enthusiasm and showcase the elite skills of our players in front of the largest crowd in women's hockey history.”
This is the sixth time since the league's inception on Jan. 1 that the PWHL has set attendance records, with Montreal participating in five of those games. The team's season opener against PWHL Ottawa on January 2 drew a crowd of 8,318 to The Arena at TD Place, setting an attendance record for women's professional hockey.
The record was broken four days later, on January 6, when Montreal visited PWHL Minnesota and played in front of a crowd of 13,316 at the Xcel Energy Center, home of the Minnesota Wild.
The record attendance for a women's professional hockey game in the United States is 13,736 for the PWHL Boston vs. Ottawa game held at the Detroit Red Wings' Little Caesars Arena on March 16th.
When the game started, Toronto was ranked first with a record of 13-7-3 and 36 points, while Montreal was ranked third with 34 points with a record of 11-5-4.
