STARKVILLE — There was a celebratory mood at Starkville High School Thursday as four Yellow Jackets male soccer players each signed letters of intent to play collegiate soccer.
Angel Camarena signed with Blue Mountain College, Xavier Ezell with Hinds Community College, Harrison Wilsey with Collin Community College and Micah King with Itawamba Community College.
“It's a great feeling as a coach to see more players advance to the next level,” Jackets head coach Evin Watson said of the opportunity. “At the end of the day, this is what we want from our players. They deserve this opportunity because they have worked hard over the years to become the players they are today. I hope they work hard and make Starkville High School proud.”
The Jackets finished third in the region with a 13-7 record in the 2023-24 season, but lost 2-0 to Hernando in the first round.
This senior group was a key part of a Jackets team that also reached the semifinal round of the playoffs last year, posting dramatic wins over Madison Central and Hernando in the first two rounds before losing on the road to Clinton. . .
While this talented group will be sorely missed, Watson said the group could have earned more than just four scholarships had they not had competing academic and athletic interests. I believe.
“They meant a lot to this team,” Watson said of the senior class. “We have a total of 13 seniors this year and they have been an integral part of our team. Four of them have gone on to the next level, and we have many more going on to the next level. It's possible. These kids work hard both in and out of soccer, so it's just a great feeling to see them succeed in everything they do.
