After Tuesday's practice, Colorado tight ends coach Brett Bartolone was asked if he expected turnovers in his room since the transfer portal opened that morning.
“You never know,” Bartolone said. “I'm not predicting anything, but if that's the case, it's next up. We're always looking to upgrade our roster and increase the tight end room at Colorado State University.”
The next day, the top tight end in Bartolone's room decided to transfer.
Shamon Metayer, who transferred to CU from Cincinnati in January, put his name in the transfer portal on Wednesday. He was expected to be the leader of the Buffaloes' revamped tight end room.
Also on Wednesday, outside linebacker Kaili Manns and safety Vito Tisdale each added their names to the transfer portal after spending one season in Boulder.
The 15-day spring transfer portal period for undergraduate students opened Tuesday and runs through April 30th. CU has officially entered the portal with 13 players since Tuesday, but no one is more surprising than Metayer.
Metayer practiced just 10 times with the Buffs, including Tuesday. After that practice, he was interviewed by CU's Mark Johnson for the program's social media channels. The interview has since been deleted.
Bartolone said of Metayer on Tuesday: Some days are better than others. So far, every aspect of his game has been great. He needs to catch the ball down the field and make contested catches more consistently, and that's what the group as a whole has been able to do so far. But he shows up and works. We need to be more consistent now. ”
Metayer, who is 6-foot-5 and weighs 245 pounds, has two seasons of eligibility remaining and caught 23 passes last year for Cincinnati. His departure leaves CU with only three scholarship tight ends, including Louie Passarello, who is still recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him for all of 2022. Converted defenders Morgan Pearson and Savell Smalls are also on the list.
Manns, who has one season of eligibility remaining, appeared in 11 games last season, including a start in the season opener at TCU. He finished the season with nine tackles and one sack.
Manns, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 230 pounds, spent four seasons at Maine before transferring to CU last year. He had 108 tackles and 8.5 sacks with the Black Bears.
Tisdale played in three games last season, playing just three on defense. He did not record any statistics.
Tisdale, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior with two years of eligibility remaining, transferred from Kentucky to Cal State last year. He spent three seasons with the Wildcats before being released by the team in March 2023. Tisdale had 41 tackles in 19 games for the Wildcats, who missed the entire 2022 season due to injury.
