Oregon State football cornerback Daylen Austin, 19, was arrested Wednesday afternoon at the Lane County Jail on a charge of neglect of a driver in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash in Eugene on Monday.
Eugene Police Department spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said the incident happened Monday at about 9:10 p.m. at West 4th Avenue and Polk Street.
Police said the person killed was a 46-year-old man, but his name has not yet been released.
Austin was arraigned in jail on Wednesday and charged with failure to comply with driver's duty to seriously injured person.
It wasn't immediately clear when he was arrested, but he was listed as being held on the Lane County Jail roster Tuesday night. Austin was apparently released Wednesday afternoon.
He is represented by Eugene criminal defense attorney Brian Border.
The redshirt freshman did not appear at Oregon's spring practice Tuesday morning, but has previously appeared throughout camp.
The prized 2023 recruit from Long Beach, Calif., played in three games last fall, recording three tackles and one pass breakup.
“We are aware of the incident and are awaiting additional information,” an Oregon State Athletics spokesperson told the Register-Guard via email Wednesday morning.
Mr. Austin is next scheduled to appear at a hearing on May 22 at 2:30 p.m.
