McPherson was Notre Dame's starting punter in 2023. He averaged 45.1 yards per punt, but his 38 total punts did not count towards national rankings. The North Carolina native would have been ranked No. 19 in the nation if he had performed well enough to qualify for the ranking.
Although the overall rankings were strong, Notre Dame's punt coverage unit ranked only 96th in opponent return average. McPherson had 28 fair catches inside the 20-yard line and 21 punts, compared to only 10 fair catches on punts and just five finishes inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
