Tuesday's first game of the NBA Play-In Tournament wasn't the only loss for the Pelicans.
They are currently dealing with star power forward Zion Williamson's illness.
In his first NBA postseason game, Williamson had the best performance of his career, scoring a double-double with 40 points, but was forced to go to the locker room with less than four minutes left in the fourth quarter. The Pelicans lost to the Lakers 110-106.
Pelicans manager Willie Green told reporters after the game. According to ESPNWilliamson is suffering from pain in his left foot and will undergo diagnostic imaging on Wednesday.
Williamson appeared to be injured on the final basket of the game while driving toward the net late in the fourth quarter.
He faced off against the Lakers' Anthony Davis in the paint and took a lob shot that spilled, only to be immediately kicked in the bucket and winced.
The TNT broadcast showed Williamson sitting on the bench, then standing up and slamming his towel in frustration as he and team staff walked down the tunnel to the New Orleans locker room.
Per The Athletic, TNT's Allie LaForce reported on the broadcast that Pelicans executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin returned to check on Williamson.
It was certainly a frustrating ending for Williamson, who had 40 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and 17-of-27 field goals against the Lakers.
Williamson had some memorable moments, including as a power forward for the Pelicans lebron james stuffing in the first half of the match.
With this loss, the Pelicans will need to win the winner of the Kings-Warriors game to keep their postseason hopes alive.
