SCVi and high school hockey development program Valencia Prep Academy are discussing a partnership plan to take teenage hockey players to the next level.
Valencia Prep Academy is in its first year and General Manager Darcy Hodge says they want to combine hockey and education during school hours to educate youth and further develop their skills.
The prep school will operate around the school calendar from August until the end of the school year in June, allowing athletes to study and develop hockey skills.
This program has the potential to bring student-athletes from all over the country to play hockey right here in Santa Clarita.
“The level of hockey we play is high AAA,” Hodge said. “There may be a lot of kids here in Santa Clarita who want to play hockey, but that doesn't mean they're at the level to play.”
Valencia Prep Academy is currently in discussions with SCVi to develop plans for students to study under SCVi's guidance in both online programs and in-person learning.
Valencia Prep is in need of host families as our students, including those who do not live near the Santa Clarita Valley, are committed to school and hockey every day throughout the week.
Hodge said host families are responsible for providing housing, a place to sleep, food and a family-friendly environment for athletes, even if they feel directed to their homes.
To ensure the highest level of safety, all host families are required to undergo criminal background checks and other protocols before being eligible to host student athletes, Hodge said.
Host families are given monthly payments to help cover expenses, Hodge said.
Over the next three years, Hodge wants Valencia Prep Academy to become a school for all types of athletes, not just hockey.
On Saturday, there will be an information session at the Cube in Valencia from 6pm to further discuss the program and answer questions.
