Storm Lake hosted a girls soccer game against Spirit Lake, and the Tornadoes lost 5-0. The Indians scored four points in the second half.
Irazel Osegueda made 14 saves in net for Storm Lake.
“It was a great learning experience,” Storm Lake coach Katie Voortman said. “For Spirit Lake, we played a great first half in the wind. We were down 1-0 at half-time. We made 11 saves. In the second half we dialed down the intensity and let Claire Turner do what she wanted to do, especially dribble with the ball, scoring two goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half.
“We had some unfortunate injuries,” Voortman added. “My starting center back, Ashley Cruz Camacho, dislocated her knee, so we had to shuffle people around who don't normally play in that position. We lost our starting defender, Emily Sanchez, on Monday. So it really hurt us defensively. Jezebel Osegueda was also injured, but he usually gets a lot of playing time.”
SL Boys defeat Sioux City East

“We came into the game well-prepared against East,” Storm Lake coach Roberto Marinez said. “Even though we were given an early penalty, I felt like we had a better chance. “There is,” he said. “Jose Oropesa scored from a free kick and Raymond Hernandez scored shortly after, and we were leading 2-1 for most of the second half. Then it collapsed in the last three minutes of the game. In the end, we lost 3-2.
“We controlled the game most of the time,” Martinez added. “I truly believe we looked like the better team for about 75 minutes, but in high school football it’s an 80-minute game and we lost focus just like we did in the first game of the season against Sioux Center. They took advantage of our lack of concentration, so now we reflect on what happened and try to prevent something like this from happening again. There are a lot of points. We're getting better every game. As a coach, I'm very happy to accept something like this early in the season, when we can make mistakes, instead of in the postseason. We recognize that these losses are extremely beneficial to ultimately achieving our full potential.”
