GRIFFIN — The stands were packed Friday night as the Griffin High School and Spalding High School football teams each held their annual Senior Nights to honor their graduating players.
The night started with the Lady Jags defeating the Lady Bears 2-0.
The Lady Bears finished the season with 4 wins and 14 losses, failing to qualify for the playoffs.
The Lady Jags' season continues as the team heads into a playoff game against Southeast Brock on Thursday. The Lady Jags finished the regular season with a record of 7 wins and 7 losses.
After the women's game, the senior players from each team were recognized. Family members joined the players on the field as the announcer talked about highlights from their high school days. Flowers, framed jerseys and personal gifts were presented to each player as they walked the field one last time.
Griffin High School coach Xavier Coggins praised his seniors' leadership throughout the season.
“These players not only elevated themselves, they encouraged their teammates. Tonight was a showcase of their growth and the powerful legacy they left behind,” he said.
“Senior Night is more than just a football event. It's a way to honor the young men these students have grown into and wish them success in their next endeavors.” Spalding High School Head Coach Tyler Hoffman said:
After the ceremony, the men's games began, with the long-time rivals battling it out for the final time. The seniors were clearly encouraged by the occasion and showed impressive teamwork and determination.
The Bears defeated the Jags for the first time in 23 years.
With Friday's 3-1 loss, the Bears will finish the season at 11-7 and enter the playoffs as the No. 3 seed. The team heads to Savannah to play Benedict on Friday.
Friday's game was the Jags' fourth game of the week, finishing the season with an 8-6 record and entering the playoffs as the No. 4 seed. Spalding is also scheduled to travel to Savannah on Friday to take on the Islanders.
