Holly Holm is unhappy with her lack of performance against Kayla Harrison at UFC 300.
Former UFC champion Holm (15-7 MMA, 8-7 UFC) was disappointed with a one-sided fight and submission loss to Harrison (17-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. The end has come. Las Vegas. She landed just eight significant strikes in nearly seven minutes of cage time.
Holm issued a statement following the results. As always, she was humble and graceful in defeat, blaming herself for not following the “game plan” that the team at Jackson Wink MMA had put together for Harrison.
“Well, the last 10 weeks of this training camp have turned out nothing like I envisioned,” Holm said on Instagram. “There are no excuses. I have the best coaching, the best teammates, the best sparring. I have all the help I could have ever dreamed of asking for. I just go out there and play the game. I completely lost focus on my plan. I couldn't do anything I had been practicing for this fight. And kudos to Kayla. She was the better fighter tonight.
“I know I'm capable of more than that. I'm one of those people who likes to introspect rather than run away from things. Being honest with yourself is sometimes the hardest thing to do. I think so. But I'm healthy. My heart hurts. My ego is hurt. But I just want to thank all the fans who stood by me. My coaches, my family and friends, I'll be back.
At 42, Holm is the oldest active female fighter on the UFC roster. She has won just one of her past four fights, and questions remain as to what her future holds in the women's bantamweight division.
Holm has vowed to return, but UFC CEO Dana White took a different view during the UFC 300 post-fight press conference, urging the “Preacher's Daughter” to retire from MMA competition.
“I would love to see Holly retire,” White told MMA Junkie and other reporters.
