Montezuma-Cortez continues undefeated weekend as Southwest, IML race heats up

Pagosa Springs – The Montezuma-Cortez girls soccer and baseball teams took to the field Saturday in Pagosa Springs ready for a big test as both teams look to defend their 2023 league titles.
After an undefeated weekend for the Montezuma-Cortez soccer team, the Panthers are back in the thick of winning the Southwest League title with a 1-1 tie against Alamosa on Friday afternoon. The Panthers fought back the next day with a 2-1 win against Pagosa Springs.
Meanwhile, the Panther baseball team didn't need much heartbreaking drama on a perfect Saturday, defeating the Pirates 12-3 and 19-7 in a doubleheader and improving to 2-0 in league play. Ta.
]Under first-year coach Melody Harris, the Panthers bounced back on their home field and bounced back against the Mean Moose. Senior Anna Jensen scored the tying goal from the penalty spot in the 44th minute.
Jensen almost scored the winning goal 10 minutes later, but his 25-yard shot went wide of the post.
Meanwhile, the Panther defense stiffened after giving up a goal midway through the first half, with senior Grace Dallin leading the way.
In Alamosa's best chance in the second half, Panther goaltender Aubrey Rutherford stepped back and took a looping shot that cracked the line 10 minutes before full time.
The next day, Montezuma-Cortez (2-3-1) improved its undefeated record with an important win to move to 1-1-1 in the Southwest League ahead of an important road game against Bayfield on Tuesday. It's been three games in a row.From 4pm

Just as the Montezuma-Cortez baseball team was putting the finishing touches on a decisive victory, the team was in the middle of a light effort into Pagosa Springs.
Junior Seth Oakes and freshman Connor Rosenbaugh each got off to a strong start on the mound, and the offense did more than enough to support the cause.
Freshman Easton Pixler and sophomore Darren Daves each had four hits in the second half of the double, with Daves scoring seven points in the second game alone and finishing with 11 points on the day.
Sophomores Parker Conrad and Corey Carver combined for 11 points, and the Panthers had 29 hits over the two games.
Junior Colby Worth and freshman Michael Krupa each had three hits in the opener as the Panthers rallied from an early 2-1 deficit to take leads in the fourth and sixth innings.
The Panthers (7-7) return home next Saturday for their next league game against Alamosa.
