The NBA has Saturday off in preparation for Sunday's final day of the regular season, but the Grizzlies' scorekeeper may have taken a slightly early timeout during the team's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday.
The Lakers had a closer than expected 123-120 win over the remaining Grizzlies in Memphis on Friday night, giving them a chance to retain the No. 8 seed and head into the NBA Play-Ins. But it turns out we may have had to hold on to the lead a little longer than we needed to.
On Saturday morning, NBA Twitter user Ramiro Bentes noticed that an error that occurred while resetting the shot clock caused the Lakers and Grizzlies to go into overtime by mistake for more than a minute…and apparently neither The team doesn't seem to notice either:
I just realized that last night the Lakers and Grizzlies played 13 minutes and 06 seconds in the third quarter. The game clock also mistakenly reset him to 2:20, when the shot clock was supposed to reset him to 1:14. No one noticed and the rest played with the new game clock. pic.twitter.com/oeEE0F7f3C

After the above video went viral on Saturday, the NBA released a statement admitting their mistake and confirming it… apparently no one in the entire building noticed while it was happening?
BREAKING NEWS: The NBA confirms that the Grizzlies and Lakers played an extra 1 minute, 06 seconds in Friday's game.
“Teams, referees, game clock operators, and statisticians were unaware of this error in real time,” an NBA spokesperson said.

I'd love to tease the Grizzlies any further, but given their injury woes (they were without 13 players Friday night), their regular timekeeper might have been a better fit for the team. . I had never heard of Jack White before, but he played 14 minutes in Memphis, so I guess it's usually his job to keep time*?
Again, it would be easy to make fun of the Lakers and Grizzlies' coaching staffs, especially the Los Angeles coaching staff given how important this game was to them, but I'm not saying I didn't notice watching this game. Let's fully admit that. Something happens.
I mean, I make a lot less money than Durvin Ham, but he definitely just focused on one of the many other details that made him so great in this ocean. …Oh, wait.
Oh, anyway.
The funniest result here is that this actually affected the outcome of a semi-important game, with a formal protest being filed against the contest in which the Lakers played most of the time while appearing to be playing under protest. This means that he probably had no choice but to submit the .
But sadly, due to the insincerity of Los Angeles' (apparently) entire organization this season, GG Jackson, Scottie Pippen Jr., et al. Even if there is, there are limits to what can be done. Or whether to do it.
Instead, we're left with the answer to this funny futuristic trivia featuring LeBron winning a game in 49 minutes of regulation time.
In fact, it might settle the GOAT debate. As it turns out, Jordan wouldn't do that, would he?
*This is a joke, Jack White played in three games He's on the Grizzlies and (probably) not even the team's scorekeeper. I mean, I'm not positive, but I'm pretty sure.
