GEORGETOWN, Texas (KTSM) — The San Elizario High School boys soccer team is state champion.
San Elizario defeated Boerne 1-0 on Friday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown, Texas to win the UIL Class 4A boys soccer state championship.
This is the fourth time in program history that the San Elizario boys soccer team has won a state championship. The Eagles are a perfect 4-0 in reaching the state title game.
San Elizario's Francisco Marquez scored the only goal of the tournament in the 62nd minute. A shot from about 25 yards made the difference and the Eagles took the lead.
San Elizario dominated the match, outscoring Boerne 13-1.
This broke the defensive stalemate.
Both teams entered halftime tied 0-0, but San Elizario spent most of the first half in Boerne's half. San Elizario had five quality shots in the first half, but Boerne goalkeeper Ben Niedecken was like a brick wall, making five saves.
San Elizario ends the season with 24 consecutive wins. The Eagles finished with a total of 24 wins and 3 losses, marking their second consecutive season with 20 or more wins. Most importantly, San Elizario, led by head coach Max Sappenfield, returns home with its fourth state championship in the past nine years.
