Roman “Chocolatito” announced live during a press conference in Managua, Nicaragua that his long-awaited return to the ring will take place on Friday, July 12th at the 15,000-seat Alexis Arguello Arena. ESPN Knockouts will be televised. Roman will have the support of his Nicaraguan comrades for the first time since winning five world titles during the trip, dominating the 'fly' division and taking the championship title in the process.
Gonzalez's return to Nicaragua will be the biggest boxing event since December 18, 1977, when the legendary Alexis Arguello last fought in his home country.
Roman Gonzalez: “My whole family is very happy and excited to compete in front of the Nicaraguan people. It would be a dream come true to be crowned a six-time champion in five different divisions here in Nicaragua. And the best player of all time for my team will always be Alexis Arguello.”
Felix “Tuto” Zabala Jr./All-Star Boxing: “The people of Nicaragua will experience a historic night of boxing. I am thrilled to be able to bring this fight to you with my partner and mentor, Akihiko Honda of Teiken Promotions.” For over 20 years, we have been passionately working to develop boxing in the region and produce world title fights. Roman has always been a dream and now we are making it a reality. This is going to be something special. ”
Carlos Brandon/Roman Gonzalez Manager: “It will be a very interesting fight after nearly 19 months of inactivity. We are expecting a positive win and look forward to the title win after that, but we will continue to do so at home with the support of our fans.” Why don't you try playing with it?”
Roman's selection includes five different opponents, including countries such as Mexico, the United States, Panama and the Philippines. This historic night is called “Regreso a Casa”, or Homecoming.
