Following a national search, Georgia Tech's Vivek Sarkar has been appointed Dean and John P. Imlay Jr. Chair of the School of Computing, effective June 1.
Sarkar brings experience and expertise to this role, having made significant contributions to computing in academia and industry throughout his distinguished career. Most recently, he served as Dean of the School of Computer Science and Stephen Fleming Telecommunications Chair at Georgia Tech.

McLaughlin, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. “He is an outstanding leader for the Computer Science Department and will bring that leadership to the entire university. He will provide the strongest support to our faculty, staff, and students. I am confident that he will take us to even greater heights and lead us into the next era of computing in technology. ”
As a pioneer in this field, Sarkar's work advanced academic understanding of high-performance computing systems and influenced the development of technologies that shaped modern society. His research led to breakthrough advances in parallel computing, making complex calculations more efficient and easier to program. In addition to his academic achievements, Sarkar is also passionate about mentoring the next generation of computer scientists and engineers. He is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the computing field and ensuring all individuals have the opportunity to succeed.

Prior to joining Georgia Tech, he served as the ED Butcher Chair in Engineering and Dean of the Computer Science Department at Rice University. Previously, he worked at IBM Research as a senior manager and a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. Sarkar completed his Ph.D. He holds a PhD in computer science from Stanford University and has received numerous awards and honors for his groundbreaking research. He is a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has served as a member of the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Scientific Computing Advisory Board since 2009, from 2015 he has served as a board member of the Association for Computing Research until 2022, and from 2022 he has served as a member of the ACM Council. According to US News & World Report, Georgia Tech's College of Computing is the largest computing program in the United States and ranks #6 for undergraduate computing education and #7 for graduate computing education.
