EDMONDS — Sophomore midfielder Eddie Carli led the offense Wednesday night with a hat trick for the Shorecrest High School boys soccer team.
Shorecrest came into the Wesco 3A/2A race coming off a stalemate against Mountlake Terrace, and the Scots came back to life at the right time by defeating the Hawks 5-0 at Edmonds Stadium.
Carli had goals in the 6th, 41st and 61st minutes, while teammate and junior Wyatt Kimball also had two goals. Kimball's scores were 52nd and 62nd.
The Scots (5-3-3 overall, 5-2-3 league) had not scored in three straight games before Wednesday's tilt. Terrace (4-4-3, 4-3-3) hadn't lost since March 19.
“We played much better today,” Shorecrest head coach Teddy Mitalas said. “And to be honest, it was (Eddie) who helped us out. He has a lot of soccer knowledge and a good soccer IQ. …He gave us a lot. He gave it to me.”
Carli evaded multiple defenders to score his first goal, but the Scot continued to defend and went into the break holding a 1-0 advantage. He wasted no time in the second half, scoring his second goal in the first minute.
“We needed something to push us (and) after the first one, we felt some freedom,” Kari said. “And then we ended up putting a few more together. Mountlake Terrace are a good team and I thought we did a good job of giving them a score like this.”
Kari's offensive outburst affected the Scots throughout the second half, with Kimball scoring both of his goals after halftime. After Carli completed his hat trick in the 61st inning, Kimball came back in the 62nd to deliver the knockout punch.
“Before the game, we talked about how we hadn't scored in three games,” Carli said. “I think that helped us throughout the game. … I'm very happy as a team and it's going to be good for the upcoming games.”
