SEATTLE (AP) — A University of Washington football player has been arrested and charged with raping two women in Seattle, court documents say, after at least one of the charges was known to the school. He is said to have played in two playoff games.
Seattle police arrested 18-year-old Tyryn “Tybo” Rogers on Friday and booked her into the King County Jail, KING-TV reported. He was charged Tuesday with second-degree rape and third-degree rape, and bail was set at $150,000 in both cases, according to court documents.
It was not immediately known whether Mr. Rogers, who lives in Bakersfield, Calif., had an attorney who could comment on his behalf. Jail records show he was released on bond. Attempts by The Associated Press to reach him were not immediately successful.
The University of Washington Athletic Department announced in a statement Tuesday that Rodgers has suspended all team activities until further notice. The university said in a statement that it will continue to gather facts and cooperate with police upon request.
A Seattle Central Community College student told police she was raped in the city's Capitol Hill neighborhood last year. According to court documents, Rogers and the 19-year-old woman met and began exchanging messages in August 2023 after matching on the dating app Tinder. According to the court, Mr Rogers went to her apartment on October 23 and assaulted her. document.
Authorities said in court documents that the woman reported the alleged rape to police on Oct. 28 and completed a sexual assault kit at Harborview Medical Center.
A 22-year-old University of Washington student reported being raped in the university district in November 2023, police said.
According to court documents, the woman met Rogers at a college Halloween party and they later matched on Tinder. Police said the two made plans to spend time together a few weeks later, and that Rodgers assaulted her as soon as she entered the apartment. The woman told police that Rogers “strangled her with one of his hands.”
The second woman reported the alleged rape to the university on Nov. 28, police said. Police said in her court documents that Rogers called her that day to question her about the charges against her.
He was suspended from team activities around late November 2023, according to court documents. The freshman running back was not part of the team's Dec. 1 win over the Oregon Ducks in the Pac-12 Championship Game.
At the time, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb said in a press conference that Rodgers was “working through some issues, some challenges that he's had off the field,” according to court documents. According to the documents, Rodgers returned to team practice by mid-December.
Multiple emails were also sent within the University of Washington athletics department confirming that Rodgers should be removed from the team's traveling roster for the Pac-12 Championship Game, although documents did not provide a reason for such action. The document states that it was not done. However, a month later, he was cleared to play in two of the Huskies' College Football Playoff games.
Rodgers had five carries for 19 yards in the Huskies' semifinal victory over the Texas Longhorns on January 1. Rodgers, 18, had a 2-yard rush in the national championship game against the Michigan Wolverines on January 8.
Washington was coached last season by Karen DeBoer, who resigned after the national championship game to take over at Alabama. Jed Fisch is currently Washington's head coach.
After Tuesday's practice, Fisch told local media he had not been informed that Rodgers was suspended last year or why.
“That's not what I came here for,” Fish said. “As soon as we learned of the allegations and brought them to our attention, he was suspended indefinitely. No comment on what happened in the past. That doesn't concern me.”
