UTICA, N.Y. — Lisa Hemmerle made her first career start in goal for the varsity as Germany defeated China 3-0 on Tuesday to end the qualifying round at 4-0, the program's first. history.
The 28-year-old Hemmerle easily recorded a shutout as Germany defeated China 44-9. German starter Sandra Abstreiter was given a day off as the team had already advanced through Group B.
Germany advances to Thursday's quarterfinals where they will face the Czech Republic (widely known in English as the Czech Republic).
China started Grace (Jiahui) Zhang, an 18-year-old who plays high school hockey in Minnesota.
Germany started scoring early. Zhang stopped a long shot, but Laura Kluge grabbed the rebound 28 seconds into the game.
Czech Republic 6, Switzerland 1
Captain Aneta Tejralova scored 37 seconds into the game, and Nathalie Mlinkova added three goals to help the Czech Republic overcome winless Switzerland.
The Czech Republic also scored two goals 76 seconds apart. Tereza Vanisova put the Czechs ahead at 2-1, with Mlinkova backhanding the rebound into the net.
Daniela Peixova scored the Czech Republic's first power-play goal of the tournament midway through the third game.
Tejralova added a short-handed goal with 4:55 left in the game when she hit a shot over the pads of Saskia Maurer and 3.5 seconds left.
Maurer, making his first start at the World Championships, had 36 shots on net against Switzerland, who will face Finland in the quarterfinals.
Japan 3, Denmark 0
Japan won the final qualifying match and advanced to the quarterfinals.
The victory eliminated the Danes and China from the playoffs and advanced to Division IA in 2025.
Japan will play the United States on Thursday in the last of four quarterfinal games.
Japan scored on the first shot of the game when Remi Koyama sent in a loose puck on a power play. Japan doubled their lead with the second goal, thanks to Takasuzuka's excellent individual skill from Shiga Akane.
Rui Ukita added an empty netter after Denmark pulled their goaltender with over four minutes left.
Riko Kawaguchi achieved a shutout victory with just eight shots.
