Hey, can Corbin Kopetsky's Davie varsity soccer team catch a break?
In Kopetsky's first year as head coach in 2022, his War Eagles went 1-4 in games decided by one point. Last year, they went 0-4 in such games. This year, we have 1 win and 3 losses in games with a one point difference. That's a 2-11 record over three years in games that could have gone either way.
With a little more luck, Davie's 2024 record would be much better than his 3-4-1 overall record and 0-4-1 in the Central Piedmont Conference.
“We stepped up to the challenge,” Kopetsky said after narrow losses to Mount Tabor and West Forsyth. “We're young and we're the underdogs. It's tough to be in there and know we're right there and we're about to reach our limit and burst the dam. We just need a little more pressure.”
Tabor 4, Davie 3 (OT)
Runner Robinson came on smoking hot and the visiting War Eagles led for much of March 25th. However, Mount Taber bounced back as Davie suffered a heartbreaking loss in overtime.
Robinson, a sophomore, scored twice and Davie went into the break with a 2-0 lead. She has scored six goals, the most on the team.
“Lanna played great,” Kopetsky said. “She attacked her opponent's last line. She pushed and did what I wanted her to do.”
Tabor returned to tie the score at 2, but Lydia Potell put Davie ahead 3-2. Tabor then made it three with 10 minutes left in regulation. After the first 10 minutes of overtime, it was still 3-3.
Any chance for a special victory ended when Tabor scored what would become the winning goal in the 94th minute, six minutes into the second OT.
The Spartans have an overall record of 45-3-2 against Davie. After being down 0-2, a switch was turned on.
“They're a well-coached team,” Kopetsky said. “They’re strong every year, just like any other team in Forsyth County.”
Note: Tabor improved to 7-3 and 3-2 in CPC. …Remarkably, this was the sixth consecutive game between Davie and Tabor decided by one goal. In 2022, Tabor won 2-1 and Davie won 1-0. In 2023, Tabor defeated Davie by scores of 1-0, 1-0, 2-1. …The game against Tabor was Davie's fifth consecutive one-point or tie game this season.
WF 3, Davie 1
The War Eagles showed their mettle in a game that went scoreless for 57 minutes. However, they fell short again, losing at home to West Forsyth on March 27th.
Most of the games were fun, especially considering the Titans have been a powerhouse in the CPC for years.
“We competed,” Kopetsky said. “We made them earn it. They've lost one conference game in the last four or five years.”
Their overall record in the series was 1-62-2, but the War Eagles kept West off the board for more than half the time. However, the dam burst in the 58th minute. West scored three goals in five minutes to take a 3-0 lead.
“There's a reason they're No. 1 in the conference,” Kopetsky said. “We created chances. We were much better in that regard this year. But we couldn't put them in the back of the goal.”
Davey did make one shot, and it was beautiful. With 15 seconds left, Jaden Sink scored one from 35 yards out.
“Jaden hit in the low 90s,” Kopetsky said. “She's a phenomenal athlete. She helps her work there and Skylar Link is right there with her.”
Kopetsky said Link, Kim Torres and Postel were a big part of Davie's staying power against West.
“Skyler played really well (defensively),” he said. “She stopped a lot of through balls and kept us in the game. We know what we're getting from Kim every night (defensively). She's a baller. They were all over the place.”
The coach also gave praise to Caroline Mitchell, Kaylee Willard and Monica Ramirez.
“Caroline has been playing great in midfield,” he said. “She doesn't back down. If they hit her, she hits them back. She has a work ethic. Kayley gets open on the wing and creates chances. Monica ( I had to replace Riley Almond (who graduated) and she wasn't that small of a player (at right back). She stepped up to the plate and did everything I needed. She's been playing great.”
Note: Davie played so hard that the 3-1 was their worst loss of the year. …West improved to 6-2-1 and 5-0 in CPC. …Last year, the Titans defeated Davie 5-0, 6-1.
