Next Saturday, Sunnyside Boxing Club will be hosting a highly competitive boxing tournament at St Vincent's GAA complex from 4pm.
Sunnyside Boxing Club was founded in 1927.
The famous club is a storied house of Irish boxing legends and is currently planning to celebrate its 100th anniversary in three years' time.
The tournament next Saturday is well organized by the club.
In addition to boxers from Cork, top athletes from around the country will also be participating.
Matches from minors to seniors to elites are often held.
This will ensure many great contests and provide a great night of boxing for all fans of the sport.
Over the years, thousands of young people have boxed at this club.
The response to The Echo's boxing page every Thursday confirms this.
This weekend, many former Sunnyside boxers will be taking part in the tournament and will have the opportunity to support the club once again.
This opportunity, for many, will be Sunnyside's chance to see promising Mike McCarrick in a heavyweight contest. Clubs from across the country are taking part, including the long-established St. Francis Club in Limerick and boxers from Crumlin BC, the famous bastion of boxing in Dublin.
The capital's club is coached by iconic double Olympian Phil Sutcliffe.
The participation of these clubs in the Sunnyside Tournament reflects the respect and high esteem that all clubs across the island of Ireland have for Cork clubs.
Sunnyside BC is currently led by chairman Kieran Joyce, Cork's boxer of the century.
However, head coach Gordon Joyce has gone to great lengths to build the club back into a major force in Irish amateur boxing.
Mr Gordon's efforts are well supported by the outstanding work of a great committee including Shane Long, Mick Nagle and club general secretary Mark Burley.
This is another Olympic year and Sunnyside has produced great Olympians such as Kieran Joyce, Paul Buttimer and Michael Roche.
Frank O'Sullivan was also a champion boxer at Sunnyside before founding the famous Birmingham ABC.
The focus now is on the club's future.
Sunnyside is mean and there are voices in Leeside boxing circles saying it's time to make Sunnyside great again.
Meanwhile, last Saturday, Glen Boxing Club chairman Anthony Connolly gave an interview to Cork City Community Radio.
This is the only community station operating in the south of the capital, offering a great opportunity for people living in the area to listen to local issues and events taking place in the city.
Connolly was kindly interviewed by Chris O'Leary on Saturday morning's prime time show.
Anthony Connolly spoke about his boxing career and how he got involved in boxing.
He gave a general overview of the history of the Glen Boxing Club.
When asked about his role as club president, he said: “I work with a very good coaching staff and committee.
“We are very conscious of being Ireland's oldest boxing club and are very proud of that.
“But we always want to set the standard.”
The Glen Boxing Club is currently embarking on another new project.
They are opening a museum that will tell the history of Cork boxing over 150 years.
Mr Connolly outlined the many items and memorabilia that will be on display.
The museum, named after the club's first president Thomas McCurtain, will be officially opened on Saturday 20th April by Tánaiste Michel Martin.
Chairman Glenn gave a great insight into many of the developments within the club over the years, as well as an overview of the success enjoyed by many of Cork's boxers.
The interview also included the opportunity for Anthony to pick out a few songs, and on this occasion the Blackpool man aptly chose Eye of the Tiger and The Contender.
All in all, it was a fun piece to listen to over the weekend on Cork City Community Radio on 100.5 FM.
Last week was a week of mixed fortunes for Cork's young boxers.
Following such high standards in the Cork County Championship, Leaside's sentiments were secretly certain that they would turn county championship glory into national success.
For both male and female athletes, reaching the national stadium was a huge accomplishment.
The Chairman of Cork County Board congratulated all Cork boxers. Some will have to wait a little longer, but for others that day will come during last week's National Underage Championship session.
Boxing on Leaside continues to thrive, with the following boxers now enjoying the task of winning an All-Ireland boxing title.
Dan Fitzgerald, Mayfield BC, Michael Keeley, Glen BC, Wiktoria Ruzdevska, Northside BC, Holly Dineen, Abbey Murray, Muskerry BC, Kieran O'Flynn, St. Colman's BC, Clare Crowley, St. Martha's BC, William Heaphy and Golden Gloves BC all won championships.
The outstanding achievements of these boxers will be celebrated at the Cork Boxing Breakfast and in due course the Jack McAuliffe Gold Medal will also be presented.
