LAS VEGAS – Norma Dumont has revealed plans to return to bantamweight and wants to become UFC champion.
Dumont (11-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC), who competed in the UFC women's featherweight division, moved back up to 135 pounds last Saturday and defeated former champion Germaine de Randamie. Dumont defeated De Randamie (10-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) by unanimous decision on the preliminary card of UFC Fight Night 240.
Now, coming off a three-fight win streak in the upper division with a win over a former champion, Dumont is looking for a big challenge to get closer to the UFC belt.
“I'm going for the title and I'm not shy about it,” Dumont said in a post-fight interview at UFC Fight Night 240. “I think the fact that I moved down to bantamweight means a lot and it means I came here aiming to win the title. I want a top five (opponents).
“It doesn't matter how dangerous she is. You know I'm going to stand there and make my play dignified. No matter who the UFC puts in front of me, I'm going to dominate.” I want to make sure I have the most uncomfortable match this fighter will ever face and bring the maximum level of discomfort.”
This was a big win for Dumont, as it was the first time he faced and won against a former UFC champion. The Brazilian was very emotional after his victory.
“It was a very emotional match. One of the most emotional matches I've ever had here and certainly in my career against Germaine, who is a very tough opponent.” Dumont said. “I mean, she's a very tough fighter and it's very special for her to go out there and face someone she's looked up to in her career.
“I hope she doesn't retire again and I hope she stays because she's a very good fighter. She's a very good fighter and still has a lot to offer this division.”
