CORPUS CHRISTI – Both Boerne High School soccer teams advanced to this year's state tournament with wins in regional championship games Saturday in Corpus Christi.
The Hounds scored the only goal of the game on a Brett Hetty header off a Shea Gonzalez corner kick with eight minutes remaining, and the Boerne Boys defeated Progreso 1-0. Progreso was down three players after receiving a red card for a brawl in Friday's semifinal game, but still had a tough battle against the Greyhounds.
The Lady Hounds faced district foe Davenport in a shootout and won 3-2 in the shootout. Anna Darling ultimately converted the winning penalty for Boerne on her fourth attempt.
Davenport briefly led 2-1 in the shootout, but missed its final three shots. Boerne tied it with his third, and Dahlin hit the go-ahead kick to make it 3-2 with one point left.
Wolves had their fifth try flicked off the crossbar, but BHS were unable to catch it so there was no need to kick the final try.
