A recent ESPN poll ranks Georgia's Kirby Smart as the top coach in college football.
Time passes quickly. In the blink of an eye, Kirby Smart enters his ninth season as Georgia's head football coach. It was a meteoric rise to the top of the sport, but in many ways it seemed inevitable.
Smart took credit for Valdosta State's great staff, which included Hal Mumme, Chris Hatcher, Will Muschamp and the late Mike Leach. He then studied at his LSU in Miami as Nick Saban's right-hand man. [NFL], Alabama. He then became the head coach of a program in one of the most talented states in the country and turned it into two SEC championships and two national championships.
Now that Nick Saban is enjoying retirement, it seems almost inevitable that Smart will ascend from a young head coach to one of the top coaches in the sport. In fact, on his recent ESPN writers' panel, Kirby he was tabbed as Smart being just that.
In an ESPN poll ranking college football's top head coaches, Kirby Smart received all 10 first-place votes, ahead of Alabama's Karen DeBoer and Utah's Kyle Whittingham.

Smart has a record of 94-16 in 110 games as head coach at the University of Georgia, and is one of only three active head coaches to have won a national championship. [Dabo Swinney – Clemson & Mack Brown – North Carolina]. His Georgia program is once again a heavy favorite to finish No. 1 overall this year, and falling short of a College Football Playoff berth would be a huge disappointment.
